BlackBerry Programming 101 - How to Get Started With BlackBerry Software Development

The success of newer BlackBerry models like the Pearl, Curve, Bold and Storm have allowed RIM (Research in Motion) to penetrate the consumer smartphone market and go head-to-head with the Apple iPhone as an application platform. If you've been ignoring the BlackBerry platform because it was too Enterprise-focused for your applications, it might be time to specifically target the BlackBerry. Here's how you get started.

It's Java Time

BlackBerry development for all recent models is done exclusively in Java. So if you're not a strong Java programmer, now's the time to brush up on your Java programming skills. (C# programmers will find the transition to Java fairly simple, the languages are very close in most respects.) Don't learn about the newest Java features, however, because the BlackBerry platform is built on top of Java Micro Edition (Java ME), which is itself a derivative of Java version 1.3. So forget all the fancy (but useful) language features introduced in Java 1.5 -- generics, enumerations, and so on -- you can't use these in BlackBerry programming. You can't also use most of the library classes you're familiar with -- they're just not there. A small subset of the Java Standard Edition (Java SE) classes are supported, as well as a number of BlackBerry-specific classes.

BlackBerry Programming 101 - How to Get Started With BlackBerry Software Development

Java Micro Edition?

Once you've brushed up on your Java, you need to spend a bit of time understanding the Java ME platform, which was formerly known as Java 2 Micro Edition, or J2ME for short. You need to understand the concepts of configurations and profiles, and in particular the CLDC and MIDP standards. You'll find lots of information about these in various books and on Sun's Java development site.

The BlackBerry Platform

After learning about Java ME, it's time to explore the BlackBerry platform. The BlackBerry platform is based on the CLDC and includes support for MIDP 2.0. However, a large number of BlackBerry-specific classes are also provided. Which brings you to the first question you'll face: are you going to write a BlackBerry application or a MIDP application? In a MIDP application you're constrained to only use the APIs exposed by the CLDC and MIDP standards. Your application will run on the BlackBerry and on most cellphones, but it won't be able to use any of the BlackBerry's special features. You can use any MIDP-compatible development tool, such as the Sun Java Wireless Toolkit for CLDC (formerly known as the J2ME Wireless Toolkit), to create your applications.

Most application developers opt to build BlackBerry-specific applications. This means learning the BlackBerry-specific APIs -- including new user interface classes -- and using the BlackBerry Java Development Environment (JDE) to develop your applications. The JDE, which is free to download, works with the standard Java Software Development Kit and provides you with all the tools necessary to create, package, test and debug BlackBerry applications. You don't even need a BlackBerry handheld, because the JDE includes a full-featured BlackBerry device simulator. A complete set of JavaDocs is provided that describes all the classes and interfaces available to programmers.

After downloading and installing the JDE, you'll want to read the developer's guides that come with the JDE and look at the sample applications that are shipped with it. Then start your development by writing a few simple applications to get a feel for the BlackBerry APIs and the tools.

Get A BlackBerry Handheld

Although you can develop and test your applications for free, at some point you'll need to run the application on an actual BlackBerry handheld. This will cost you money, of course, and so it's not something you'll want to do until you're serious about writing BlackBerry applications. On-device testing is crucial to ensuring that the application works correctly, because the simulator is not a perfect emulation system.

If you're truly serious about BlackBerry application development, consider also joining one of the BlackBerry developer programs for additional support and early access to new devices and APIs. You should also explore RIM's other BlackBerry developer resources. There are also third-party forums and books available to help you learn the BlackBerry platform.

Conclusion

BlackBerry programming is not hard if you know some Java and you understand the constraints and limitations of the underlying Java ME platform. You have to learn a new set of APIs and use new development tools, but in the end it's just another kind of Java programming.

History of the Media, Radio, and Television

When were the forms of media created? When did advertising first show up? Who owns the media?

Creation of the various forms of media

*

History of the Media, Radio, and Television

Newspapers & Magazines ~ 1880

*

Movies ~ 1910

*

Television ~ 1945

*

Cable Television ~ 1980's

*

Satellite Television, Internet, Digital Communication ~ End of the 20th century

In 1920, radio was first developed, primarily for use by the military, strictly for sendingHistory of the Media - Old Radios messages from one location to another. David Sternoff, the then-president of RCA, first had the idea to sell radio sets to consumers, or what were then called radio receivers. However, consumers needed a reason to buy radios, so RCA was the first to set up radio stations all over the country. Between 1920 and 1922, 400 radio stations were set up, starting with KBKA in Pittsburgh. Stations were also set up by universities, newspapers, police departments, hotels, and labor unions.

*

By 1923, there were 600 radio stations across the United States, and million worth of sets had been sold.

The biggest difference in radio before and after 1923 was that the first advertising was not heard on the radio until 1923. RCA at the time was made up of four companies:

*

AT&T

*

General Electric

*

United Fruit

*

Westinghouse

United Fruit was one of the first global corporations, and one of the first to advertise on the radio. The AT&T division of RCA first thought about selling time on the air to companies, which marked the start of "toll broadcasting." WEAF was the first station to operate this way, causing widespread outrage, and accusation of "polluting the airwaves."

Because of this controversy, the practice of selling advertising time was called "trade name publicity." Sponsors linked their name with a program on the air, rather than advertising a specific product in a 30 second "commercial" as we know it today.

Why did AT&T decide to experiment with charging companies for air time?

AT&T was not making any money from broadcasting at the time since they only made transmitters, not receivers. They only made money when new radio stations bought the equipment required to broadcast. They did not make money from consumers buying radios.

AT&T also started the practice of paying performers for their time on the air, rather than only volunteers, which was standard practice for radio content up until that point.

The first radio network

In 1926, RCA set up the first radio network, NBC. They decided it was more effective and efficient to produce shows in New York City, and then link the main radio station with stations all across the country, connected by AT&T (another RCA company) phone lines. (Now television networks are linked by satellite to their affiliates).

This was the beginning of the network affiliates system. The ideal network makes sure everyone in the country is capable of listening to their signal. NBC at the time had two philosophies:

*

Radio content was a "public service," whose function was to sell radios.

*

Radio content was designed to generate income from advertising.

History of the Media In 1927, the second network was formed. It was CBS, started by William Paley. Paley was the first to think that networks could make money strictly from advertising, not even getting involved in the sales of radios. Like AT&T, CBS did not make radios. From the start, they made their money from selling advertising.

The rising of radio networks caused the Radio Act of 1927 to be passed, which established the FRC, or what is now known as the FCC, to allocate broadcast licenses. The need for such an organization was brought on by the fact that airwaves are limited resources, and broadcasting itself is a scarce public resource. By the 1930's, the structure of radio have been set by the commercial format, although advertising never dominated radio like it would television later on.

In the 1920's and '30's, radio programs were divided into two groups. Sponsored shows, which had advertisers, and unsponsored shows, which did not. The radio station paid for the unsponsored shows. The sponsored shows, on the other hand, were created entirely by the company sponsoring the show; advertisers were totally in charge of the radio station's content. The content became advertising. Radio set the precedent for television, in that the same companies that controlled radio early on went on to control television.

Soon thereafter, television inherited the structure of radio. In the '40's, during the rise of television, RCA also held a monopoly on all television sets sold. By 1945-1955, advertising had taken over all of television. Television was organized around the premise of selling things. The entire television industry was creating a political atmosphere of suspicion and fear. Senator Joseph McCarthy, the founder of McCarthyism, which was based on the fear of Communism, and the HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee, began to question people involved in television about their beliefs and associations.

What affected television in its early stages?

*

Politics (McCarthyism / HUAC).

*

Blacklists: From almost the inception of television, many writers, directors, and actors were considered to be pro-Communist and/or un-American.

Certain topics were totally off-limits at the time for television, particularly issues of race relations in the 1960's. Overall, networks were not happy with the political situation for television in the 1960's, both in terms of the blacklists, and of the fact that when every show had one sponsor, that sponsor controlled the entire program. Networks preferred to control the program, by way of moving to multiple sponsors/advertisers, where networks would retain control of the show, and advertisers would buy time in between the programming.

In the 1950's, networks decided to eliminate the practice of sponsors controlling the shows with a move to spot selling, or advertisements between programs, as we know it today. What caused the move to spot selling?

1.

Discovery of fraud in the quiz shows on television. Quiz shows were extremely popular at the time, and were liked by the networks, the sponsors, and the viewers alike. It turned out, however, that quiz shows were largely fixed. Charles Van Doren on "21" became a huge star due to his repeated wins, until it came out that the whole thing had been fixed. In the case of "The ,000 Question," the owner of Revlon was personally hand-selecting the winners and losers on the show.

2.

It was becoming financially difficult for just one advertiser to support an entire show.

Around this same time came the inception of ratings to measure a show's popularity. Ratings, quite simply, measure the number of people watching a show. To understand why ratings are so important, it's crucial to understand how the television industry works, through three questions, and their respective answers:

1.

Who owns television? [The networks]

2.

What is sold on television? [Viewer's time, not television shows]

3.

Who are the customers of television? [Advertisers, not viewers]

This might be a counterintuitive concept for some. The networks, which own television, areHistory of the Media - Old Television the buyers of shows, not the sellers. On the other hand, they sell our eyeballs, so to speak, to advertisers. Networks want the maximum possible profit from buying and selling time, both viewers' time, and advertisers' time.

The primary measure of television ratings, which determine the price of that time being bought and sold, is AC Nielsen, an independent company which provides information as to who watches what on television. Currently, about 4,000 households are used to represent the national viewing of television. In the 1980's, only 1,200 households were used. Some households have an electronic device installed on their television which tracks what they watch, while others keep a diary of viewing habits.

There are two measures for determining a show's audience. One is the rating, and the other is the share.

*

Rating: Percentage of total homes with televisions tuned into a particular show.

*

Share: Percentage of those watching television at a particular time who are tuned into a particular show.

The share is always greater than the rating. Ratings are more important for advertisers, and share is more important to the networks.

Example:

*

Total households with televisions: 150 million

*

Total households watching television at 8pm on Monday nights: 90 million

*

Total households watching American Idol at 8pm on Monday nights: 45 million

*

Therefore: Rating: 30, Share: 50

It's important to note how many factors can skew the results. Shows cost producers much more than the networks typically pay them for those shows. The way for producers to make money is by getting the networks to renew the show, in order to have a shot at making money from syndication on other channels, also knows as reruns. That is the case when individual stations (say for example, the Miami affiliate of ABC wants to carry Seinfeld), buy the rights to a show from the producers of that show. Shows that last only one season, for the most part, lose millions of dollars. One of the most important factors in whether shows will be renewed or not is their rating.

This brings us to how ratings can be skewed. For example, if a show has a 20 share, and it needs a 25 share to be renewed for another season, what might the producers do? In principle, they need to convince another 5% of the people watching television when their show is on to watch their show; this is no simple task, as that involves convincing millions of people. However, since the ratings are based on those 4,000 Nielsen households, that means that they could convince just 200 Nielsen households to watch their show, which would increase the share from 20 to 25. This is why Nielsen households must be kept totally secret from the networks. When the Nielsen households have leaked to the networks, one way which they got people to watch their show was by offering viewers a small sum of money for filling out a survey about a commercial which they were told would play only during a particular show. Since they had to watch that channel while their show was on, this would boost the share.

Once ratings are determined, advertising prices are set by two factors:

* The size of the audience.

* The demographics (income, age, gender, occupation, etc) of the audience.

In short, the job of television programs is to collect our time as a product, which they then sell to advertisers. Programs have to support the advertising, delivering viewers in the best possible state of mind for buying when the time for the commercials comes, which brings us to the Golden Age of Television.

The 1950's are considered the "Golden Age of Television." During this time, something called the "Anthology Series," where different actors each week took part in a show gained History of the Media - I Love Lucypopularity across the board...that is, with everyone except for advertisers. The anthology series format was not right for advertisers, as it covered topics which involved psychological confrontations which did not leave the viewers in the proper state of mind for buying the products shown to them between program segments. The subject matter of the anthology series was of the type that undermined the ads, almost making them seem fraudulent.

This brought up the question of what to network executives actually want shows to do? The answer is not to watch a program that makes them feel good, makes them laugh, or excites them, but rather to watch the television for a set amount of time. With so many new shows being proposed, standards began to be intentionally, or unintentionally, laid out for what shows could and couldn't do. Risks could only be taken at the beginning and/or end of shows. Laugh tracks were conceived to tell the audience when to laugh. Programs began being tested with audiences prior to being put on television and/or radio. Show writers now had to write shows that would test well.

Naturally, this caused many of the same elements and themes to appear in all shows. This was the beginning of recombinant television culture, where the same elements are endlessly repeated, recombined, and mixed.

This same culture is what perpetuated the idea that people watch television, not specific shows. While people certainly choose to watch certain shows instead of others, people less commonly choose to watch television instead of other things. People watch television. Regardless of what was on, television viewing rates were extremely stable.

Advantages of Mathematics

Many of us wondered about the advantages of Mathematics during our childhood days. Many of us were not able to comprehend the benefits of mathematics beyond the daily usage of calculating simple numbers. Let us see in detail what are some of the benefits of learning mathematics and marveling at this arduous subject at early age.

The importance of mathematics is two-fold, it is important in the advancement of science and two, it is important in our understanding of the workings of the universe. And in here and now it is important to individuals for personal development, both mentally and in the workplace.

Mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think in abstract ways. Mathematics is important in everyday life, many forms of employment, science and technology, medicine, the economy, the environment and development, and in public decision-making.

Advantages of Mathematics

One should also be aware of the wide importance of Mathematics, and the way in which it is advancing at a spectacular rate. Mathematics is about pattern and structure; it is about logical analysis, deduction, calculation within these patterns and structures. When patterns are found, often in widely different areas of science and technology, the mathematics of these patterns can be used to explain and control natural happenings and situations. Mathematics has a pervasive influence on our everyday lives, and contributes to the wealth of the individual.

The study of mathematics can satisfy a wide range of interests and abilities. It develops the imagination. It trains in clear and logical thought. It is a challenge, with varieties of difficult ideas and unsolved problems, because it deals with the questions arising from complicated structures. Yet it also has a continuing drive to simplification, to finding the right concepts and methods to make difficult things easy, to explaining why a situation must be as it is. In so doing, it develops a range of language and insights, which may then be applied to make a crucial contribution to our understanding and appreciation of the world, and our ability to find and make our way in it.

Increasingly, employers are looking for graduates with strong skills in reasoning and problem solving - just the skills that are developed in a mathematics and statistics degree.

Let us look at a few examples. The computing industry employs mathematics graduates; indeed, many university computing courses are taught by mathematicians. Mathematics is used to create the complex programming at the heart of all computing. Also cryptography, a form of pure mathematics, is deployed to encode the millions of transactions made hourly via the Internet and when we use debit or credit cards. Mathematics and Computer Science is a popular degree choice, and four-year degrees with a placement in industry are also available. The latter give graduates plenty of relevant experience to increase their employability.

Mathematics led to the perfect ratios shown in Renaissance painting. The study of astronomy in the early times of its inception demanded the expansion of our understanding of mathematics and made possible such realizations as the size and weight of the earth, our distance from the sun, the fact that we revolve around it, and other discoveries that allowed us to move forward in our body of knowledge without which we would not have any of our modern marvels of technology.

The computer itself is a machine built upon the principles of mathematics, being an invention so important as to bring about an economic revolution of efficiency in data communication and processing.

What Is Architectural Programming?

The short answer is that Architectural programming is everything you need to know before you draw. The longer answer is that programming is a process that an Architect leads a client through to identify and articulate what the projects objectives and constraints are now and in the future. This process will involve our asking questions then listening. At the end of the process we will establish the project design objectives a list of your needs, wants, and priorities in written and numerical form. The result will be a detailed work plan that will guide the Planning and Design process. Good, detailed programming is imperative to a successful project.

The final deliverables of Architectural Programming are a Project Narrative, Program Statement, Adjacencies Diagram, and a Preliminary Budget. The Project Narrative is an overview of the entire project explaining the project scope and goals. It also contains descriptions of each department and functional spaces such as lobbies, meeting rooms, and cafeterias. The Program Statement is an overall numerical summary of the project (spreadsheet) identifying all individual requirements at a departmental level. We suggest that this statement include the following minimum information: existing spaces, proposed new spaces, future expansion, and tabulation of all space requirements including circulation, wall, and mechanical space. The Adjacencies Diagram is a graphically depiction of the spacial relationship of all the program elements to one another. The Preliminary Budget is an opinion of probable cost based on simple square footage cost of similar projects. Using experience from similar past projects we will recommend space needs, in the case of a unique requirement we will specifically study special space needs and adjacencies.

Recommended Steps in the process

The Different Types of Programming Languages - Learn the Basics

The progression of computer programming languages was made possible by the programmer's search for efficient translation of human language into something that can be read and understood by computers. The languages generated, called machine code, have high levels of abstraction, which hide the computer hardware and make use of representations that are more convenient to programmers.

As programs evolve and become more sophisticated, programmers found out that certain types of computer languages are easier to support. As expected in a dynamic discipline, there is no standard for categorizing the languages used in programming. There are, in fact, dozens of categories. One of the most basic ways to categorize the languages is through a programming paradigm, which gives the programmer's view of code execution. Among the languages classifications according to programming paradigm are:

o Object-Oriented Programming Languages
Known as the newest and most powerful paradigms, object-oriented programming requires the designer to specify the data structures as well as the types of operations to be applied on those data structures. The pairing of data, and the operations that can be done on it is called an object. A program made using this language is therefore made up of a set of cooperating objects instead of an instructions list.

The Different Types of Programming Languages - Learn the Basics

The most famous object-oriented programming these days are C#, C , Visual Basic, Java, and Python.

o Structured Programming Languages

An exceptional type of procedural programming, structured programming provides programmers with additional tools to handle the problems created by larger programs. When using this language, programmers are required to cut program structure into small pieces of code that can easily be understood. Instead of using global variables, it employs variables that are local to every subroutine. Among the popular features of structured programming is that it doesn't accept GOTO statement which is usually associated with the top-down approach. Such approach starts with an opening overview of the system with minimal details about the various parts. To add these details, design iterations are then included to complete the design.

Commonly used structured languages include C, Pascal, and ADA.

o Procedural Programming Languages

Procedural Programming involves a list of operations the program needs to complete to be able to attain the preferred state. It is a simple programming paradigm where every program comes with a starting phase, a list of tasks and operations, and an ending stage. Also called imperative programming, this approach comes with small sections of code that perform certain functions. These sections are made up of procedures, subroutines, or methods. A procedure is made up of a list of computations that should be done. Procedural programming lets a part of the code to be used again without the need to make several copies. It achieves this by dividing programmatic tasks into small sections. Because of this, programmers are also capable of maintaining and understanding program structure.

Among the known procedural languages are BASIC and FORTRAN.

These are the different types of computer programming languages that you can consider when planning to make a computer program. Procedural programming splits the program's source code into smaller fragments. Structured languages require more constraints in the flow and organization of programs. And object-oriented programs arrange codes and data structures into objects.

Pancreatitis and Alcohol

How alcohol affects the Pancreas?

The heavy consumption of alcohol can be a triggering mechanism for pancreatitis. Nobody thinks about how alcohol is affecting their pancreas until they end up admitted to the hospital with an attack of acute pancreatitis. If you or a loved one has been recently released from the hospital after a case of acute pancreatitis, you probably have some questions about what role alcohol can play in your life going forward.

Your first question is probably, "Is it still possible for a person to consume the same amounts of alcohol as before the pancreatitis attack?" The answer is no. An initial attack of acute pancreatitis puts a person at a much higher risk of developing chronic pancreatitis if they continue drinking any alcohol at all. Chronic pancreatitis is a terrible disease that causes severe pain, indigestion, and other complications. Most importantly, chronic pancreatitis significantly increases the odds of being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatitis and Alcohol

The combination of pancreatitis and alcohol is a progressive, chronic, and frequently fatal disease.

You may be thinking to yourself, "Surely I can still drink a little alcohol. Doctors will be able to fix up my pancreas again if I have another attack of acute pancreatitis. I was fine after this first attack of pancreatitis." Unfortunately, this reasoning is flawed.

There is presently no conventional medical treatment that can reverse or stop the main problems that are caused by chronic pancreatitis. These problems include minimized digestive enzyme production by pancreas and the dying of pancreatic cells. If you continue drinking any alcohol at all there is a significant chance that you will develop worsening of chronic pancreatitis.

The treatment of alcohol-induced chronic pancreatitis is a complicated process that calls that includes a variety of different alternative (non-drug, non-surgery) modalities from many different professionals. We will discuss treatments further down in the article.

Information about Alcoholic Pancreatitis

Research shows that an overall increase in the consumption of alcohol can be linked to the increase in cases of acute pancreatitis. An attack of acute alcoholic pancreatitis is generally preceded by 5-10 years of prolonged over-consumption of alcohol. In the U.S. every year, 80,000 to 200,000 people have attacks of acute pancreatitis. The number of these people is increasing yearly. It is true that not all alcoholics develop pancreatitis. However, once an alcoholic has had at least one attack of acute pancreatitis alcohol in all forms is lethal to the pancreas.

Scientific research shows that the lifespan of an acute pancreatitis patient becomes contingent upon their ability to give up drinking. Patients unable to stop drinking alcohol frequently develop chronic pancreatitis, which destroys their pancreatic gland. It is therefore necessary for patients to stop drinking alcohol altogether.

Am I an Alcoholic?

It is important to stop completely drinking after the first attack of acute pancreatitis. However, it is extremely difficult for alcoholics, as well as people in general, to give up completely alcohol. In fact, as observed through our long years of practice, it is almost impossible for an alcoholic to recover totally without the help of an experienced licensed practitioner. It sometimes even requires a team of practitioners.

It may be difficult for people to admit that they have an alcohol addiction. The results of the following self-test may be the unwelcome but necessary wake-up call that lets a person know that they have a problem.

Self Test for Alcoholism / Alcohol Abuse

The following test may help determine if you have a problem with alcohol:

- Have you ever thought you should cut down on your drinking?

- Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking habits?

- Is it hard to stop drinking after you've had one or two drinks?

- Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking?

- Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning as a little "pick-me-up" to get rid of a hangover or to steady your nerves?

- Have you ever had a problem remembering what you did during a drinking episode?

- Have you ever encountered drinking-related problems with your health, relationships, job, or the law?

If you answered "yes" to one of the above questions, you might have a problem with alcohol. If you answered "yes" to two or more of the questions, it is highly probable that you have an alcohol abuse problem. Either way, it is important to schedule an appointment with an experienced licensed practitioner as soon as possible. Then you will be able to determine what sort of treatment would benefit you most.

Treatment

Acute or chronic pancreatitis in an alcohol-addicted patient is a serious medical situation and requires an approach that utilizes the healing of both the body and the mind. The primary objective is not only to help a person quit drinking alcohol, but also to help him or her quit in a manner that does not harm their already sick pancreas.

For that reason, treating alcoholism must begin with basic detoxification. An experienced and licensed practitioner utilizes many methods while detoxifying the body:

o Colon hydrotherapy,
o Restoring friendly intestinal flora (particularly after the use of antibiotics),
o Specialized diets,
o Herbal teas and nutritional supplements,
o Drinking healing mineral water prepared by using Genuine Karlovy Vary Thermal Spring Salt.

After years of consumption, the brain becomes dependent on alcohol. Alcohol's chemistry allows it to impact almost every cell in the body, including the cells of the central nervous system. That is why the second step for treating alcohol dependency is the normalization of brain chemistry. Brain chemistry normalization is achieved through practitioners' skilled use of:

o Nutritional supplements,
o A special anti-alcohol diet,
o The addition of essential amino acids,
o Herbs,
o Magnet therapy,
o Auricular acupuncture-NADA protocol,
o Regular acupuncture, and so on.

Subconscious positive programming, or hypnotherapy, is a third practice, which is common and successful when utilized to break an alcohol addiction. If the person cannot reach medical hypnotherapist or shy to do that, custom hypnosis CDs can be created to address the particular needs and problems. Then the person can listen to the CD in the privacy of their own homes for as long as needed, and as many times as needed.

It is just as important to help heal the negative affects that alcohol has had on peoples' bodies. The long-term combination of pancreatitis and alcohol wreaks havoc on the body, causing an unhealthy acidity and a deficiency of trace elements and minerals. This is required an acid-alkaline balance normalization of the body. The Simplest Way to Watch Cable TV Through Your Computer

When people hear the words, "going to watch some TV", they automatically think of sitting on the couch in front of a giant screen television. For years upon years, this was true and the only way to watch your favorite shows. Well, now with computer technology growing and internet streaming becoming faster, watch your favorite episodes of "The Office" is now readily available from your computer.

Actually, watching TV through computers is increasingly popular as a de facto cable-TV system, and especially among households and individuals who would rather not spend extra for a subscription to cable or satellite. Plus, it has never been easier to do than it is today. All that is required is the right software, an internet connection and a computer. Here is a quick breakdown of how you can watch unlimited cable TV channels on your computer at no charge.

The first thing you want to do is make sure the computer you plan on using meets all of the minimum requirements to run cable TV without any interruptions of the signal. Typically, your computer will use a DSL Internet connection, Windows XP or Vista and the most recent Internet Explorer or Firefox version. Go to a reputable computer shop and buy a good TV tuner card to install into your PC. These can also be found for purchase online. Any similar type of adapter program will also work for your needs. You are going to have a difficult time watching anything in real time without the correct software. You can, however, still watch pre-recorded shows or downloadable programs. As you're shopping around for a TV tuner card, you'll have two options, either and internal one or an external. An internal tuner card is hooked up directly to your motherboard. An external card is plugged into the computer via a USB port. They both work the same, but you may have a more difficult time installing an internal card. Also, if you own a laptop, an internal card is not a good choice even if the external cards are much more expensive. It is a good idea to find out from your cable company if any subscription or software programs are needed before you can access the system's programming. It is normally completed through special access codes given by the cable company. Another way is through installing software directly from a CD. Now that you're all set up with the installation of the TV tuner card and the correct cable subscription, you'll need to download a quality media player to your computer in to watch these TV programs. These work much better than the players provided by the website itself. They are much more effective, and providing a more even streaming of video.

FedEx Job Opportunities - Finding FedEx Jobs Online

For those interested in careers in the transportation and information industry FedEx job opportunities should be considered. FedEx is a Fortune 500 company and continues to grow in its industry, globally recognized as a leader in delivering packages on time and without damage. Currently the corporation employs over 200,000 workers globally. FedEx Express owned by FedEx Corporation offers shipping and freight to over 200 countries in the world while FedEx Ground delivers small packages to the US, Puerto Rico and Canada. FedEx also owns several more companies. Fortunately, for job applicants this also means more FedEx job openings.

The quickest way to find FedEx job opportunities is online with job boards and various other sites that are affiliated with FedEx. These sites allow FedEx jobs to be searched by category and region with both part time and full time positions being offered. Positions are available for those looking for a physically demanding job or those looking to work in a more traditional office setting. At FedEx, Ground Administrative Clerks are often hired in the facilities to perform clerical work and record keeping. Positions for dock workers are labor-intensive requiring workers lift over a 100 pounds. On the other hand, a Quality Assurance Clerk would require both physical labor and administrative skills. A Quality Assurance Clerk would be responsible for ensuring packages are delivered to the right address, dealing with customer service complaints and be required to lift packages of various sizes.

Those with a bachelor's degree will also find that FedEx job opportunities are not just for those who have little or no training or on the job experience. A Developer Analyst at FedEx is one position where a degree is needed. The Developer Analyst would be responsible for creating business reports, analyzing systems, and dealing with coding. This position would require advanced knowledge of programming and some engineering experience. Of course, one of the most recognized FedEx job openings is that of the delivery drivers. Temporary positions can also be found during the holidays for those interested in getting their foot in the door while still attending college.

FedEx job opportunities also include the need for skilled pilots. FedEx pilots are required to have a college degree, commercial pilot certification and the ability to obtain clearance from the United States Postal Service to handle mail. Other positions in aviation are also available such as an aviation mechanic. For those interested in working for FedEx without having a boss consider their independent contractor job opportunities. These FedEx job openings allow those with entrepreneurship skills to build their own business with the FedEx brand name recognition behind them.

FedEx job openings offer many benefits to its workers that should be considered. These include flexible spending accounts, life insurance, disability insurance, pension plans, stock purchase options, paid vacations and holidays. Workers can also benefit from ongoing education opportunities with in-house certification, seminars, and management training being offered. FedEx job opportunities may also allow qualified employees to get their college degree or take additional courses related to their job with educational reimbursement by FedEx.

And, as always with any job application, make sure you follow up. Give them a call within a few days of submitting your application and let them know you're serious about getting hired. The old adage about the squeaky wheel getting the grease holds pretty true when it comes to job hunting too!

Apply for a FedEx job right now, from the comfort of your home. FedEx Job Application

I wish you the very best and I hope you find the job you're looking for.

IF-THEN Statements With Microsoft Excel

One of the basic statements for financial modeling is the IF-THEN function in Excel. While this may not be considered as robust as other approaches when doing actual computer programming (C++, Java, VB), in Excel it is rather straightforward and ubiquitous.

There are a couple of things to remember when using the IF-THEN approach:

* For basic results like "if this cell equals dog put a bone in the cell next to it" or "if the cell on my right equals rain display an umbrella sign in the cell below" or something like that. IF-THEN works well for binary situations, and is a method that the basic financial modeler can use and understand readily easily. The beauty of the function at its most basic level is the simplicity.

IF-THEN Statements With Microsoft Excel

* IF-THEN can also be used for non-binary situations, meaning that one can "nest" several sub IF-THEN statements within the cell. For example, let's assume that you had four triggering events: apple, orange, grape and banana. Depending upon the word that was in a cell, there would be one of four results. This would look like:

=IF(A1="Apple","Watch for worm",IF(A1="Orange","Citrus",IF(A1="Grape","Soon to be a raisin",IF(A1="Banana","Don't slip on the peel","Do nothing")))).

You will notice that the last bit of this text includes "do nothing", which captures any text that is not one of the specified amounts you are seeking. If there were only four options (that somehow the input cell was blocked to prevent anything other than those four choices), the code would look like this:

=IF(A1="Apple","Watch for worm",IF(A1="Orange","Citrus",IF(A1="Grape","Soon to be a raisin","Don't slip on the peel"))).

By definition, only four choices will yield three IFs - think about the fourth IF as silent to help you see why this is the case.

* The financial modeler can also link IF-THEN statements to apply a mathematical operator to two or more statements in the cell. Thus, you could create a formula like =IF(A1="Pie",1,0)+IF(B1="Soup",2,0)+IF(C1="Water",3,0). You can do this with any operator and is useful if there are discrete components to the model you are developing. As you ultimately get further into advanced modeling, this can be used for triggers, or cells that create an influx of additional information when turned to a true state. Further discussion on that will occur as we move to intermediate level issues, but just remember that there is flexibility in the IF-THEN statement from this particular perspective.

* One shortcoming of the IF-THEN statement usage is that you can only have up to seven nested statements EVER in any function in Excel. For examples, the following is a maxed out version of the IF-THEN statement:

=IF(C5=1,1,IF(C5=2,2,IF(C5=3,3,IF(C5=4,4,IF(C5=5,5,IF(C5=6,6,IF(C5=7,7,IF(C5=8,8,"No")))))))) - if you try to add another nested IF statement, you will get an error message. Part of the rationale behind that is because evaluating the IF-THEN in the standard Excel environment (as well as computer language in general) takes some time to evaluate. Granted, it is not a lot of time when thinking about a machine calculating something faster than us, but each of the evaluation steps requires computing speed and memory. If you can imagine a nested 20-step IF-THEN statement in your mind and pretend that you must evaluate that statement in order until the last part of it, you will begin to see why there needs to be extra time for the computer to do analyze it. Thus, seven is the cutoff point, but in reality, you should never need that many nested IF-THEN statements anyway.

In summary, the IF-THEN statement can be a very useful, simple approach to binary and certain non-binary situations. It is not perfect for larger database inquiries or very large spreadsheets wherein the answer to the IF-THEN drives the model, but it can suffice for everyday simple financial modeling applications, and it easy to implement and interpret.

Leather Repair - How To Repair Torn Leather Seat

There are so many different types of automotive leather seat repair, all with different situations and applications. There are holes, scratches, gouges, cuts, scrapes, worn or cracked, and just down right grungy looking leather seats. I think I got them all covered, well in this article we're going to talk about how to repair a small hole in a leather seat lean back, for those of you who don't know what a lean back is well it's the upper part of the seat.

Now when I say small this can apply for a tear up to 1 1/2" to 2", probably might go a little bigger, but lets not push it, if it needs to go to the upholstery shop for an insert then that would be better then a crappy looking leather repair on something that probably wouldn't hold anyways. When in doubt, insert it.

Prepping a seat is the key to success in any leather repair, and a lasting leather dye job. So, prep the whole lean back, and while your at it just clean the whole seat, why not, but you don't have to, with your prepping solution removing all grease, dirt, and grime. You need a clean surface and a well prepped area to work with. When I prep, I use a solution of rubbing alcohol, acetone, ammonia, and a small amount of TSP substitute, with water in a spray bottle. Spray the seat with the solution and scrub with a scotch brite pad to scuff the leather seat for leather dye adhesion and remove any grime that's on the seat, then wipe clean with a clean lint free towel. Once your clean, apply a grip base primer to the seat, I usually in most cases will dye the entire lean back when I do a repair or the entire seat, but sometimes it's not necessary, so you may not need to prime the whole seat, but do clean the seat good this cuts down on the amount of leather dye used and the ending result will be a premium leather repair.

Leather Repair - How To Repair Torn Leather Seat

Now to the hole. Lets say it's in a V shape, just for example. Like where you've gott'n out of the seat with something in your back pocket, ouch! I know the feeling, back in college I had a 1986 Mustang SVO, very rare and nice car (man I miss that car) and I got out to go to class with a pen in my back pocket and ripped about a 2" V shape in the seat, I about puked right there, and of course at the time I didn't know anything about leather repair. But now I do and here it is.

Sand the area around the tear with a 240 grit sandpaper, this gives a little more for the low heat compound to grip to. Take a piece of underpatch material and slide the under patch under the tear with a pair of tweezers, allowing about a 1/2" on the inside all the way around. I usually cut my patches in a circular shape, it makes it a little easier to slide under. You can use different types of under patches, I like the kind that is coated on one side with a heat activated glue.

Now take a drop of leather glue and spread a thin coat on the patch on the underside of the leather repair area. If the leather will lay down smoothly and match up then great, but sometimes it just won't. In this case we will use combo of the glue and your low cure leather repair compound and smooth a small amount over the patch then lay the leather down. Spread a small amount of low heat compound over the area and smooth it out with your pallet knife, remembering to keeping your area as small as possible, the smaller the better. Now heat the area with your heat gun, hold the heat gun out away from the leather repair and slowly move it into the repair area, this will give you just a little more control of the heat, you don't want to burn and shrink the leather. The idea is to cure the compound and get it to adhere before you cook the leather, it's a skill thing, practice makes perfect. Once the compound is cured immediately press the grain pad in your palm onto the repair, don't press to hard, but firm.

At this time using a wet paper towel apply a small amount of grip base to the repair area and dye with your color matched water based leather dye. Dry thin coats of dye, not wet. Then reapply and smooth out another thin coat of compound. Heat again and grain then dye, get the idea, what you are doing is building the repair up. Thin coats of compound applied and cured then reapplied, are much better then one thick coat. Once you have it built up and looking nice, blend the repair into the rest of the seat if needed, by applying thin coats of leather dye to finish it off. Drying between coats of dye with a hairdryer, and one great tip is rubbing the leather dye with your hands to force the dye into the creases of the leather helps a ton, don't be afraid to get your hands dirty. I say that but I'm allergic to rubber gloves, it bites, so I come home every day with dye all over my hands, it's a pain, but I love the work and the job looks better with a little bit of love rubbed on those leather seat repairs. After the dye is cured, apply a top coat of satin or dull leather clear top coat mixed with a bit of slip additive added for the soft feel. Dry the seat thoroughly, then apply your leather conditioner to finish and give the seat the juice it needs and a great feel and look for you.

Now there are so many other variations to this fix, sometimes I will have to use an air dry leather repair compound over the top of the low heat compound to smooth out the leather repair. Sanding it with a 400 grit sandpaper until it looks right. You can also turn your air down on your paint gun until little droplets are coming out to give it a textured look, drying between coats. Texture coatings, can be used, but if you do it right the gun effect works great. When I do a leather repair I won't give up until it looks perfect. Patience is a virtue, right. Don't get in a hurry, this will only frustrate you more and then you really got issues.

Leather repair is a craft and profession. The dyes and compounds I use are top quality and are made to last. Giving you a lasting leather seat repair, and comfort knowing you have a leather repair that will last and look great for years to come.

I hope this was some help to you, in the coming months there will be more articles like this one but on different situations on leather repair, liked I talked about in the first. There are so many different ways that a leather seat can be damaged, we spend a lot of time in our cars and well "sh$$ happens", right. So check back to see my next article on automotive leather seat repairs. If you have anything you would like to ask feel free to shoot me some comments on Leather Repair - How To Repair Torn Leather Seat.
